From his original small sketches to his prints now on display at Earls Court Gallery, Matt Mcinnes has documented the human side of Hamilton’s LRT project.

There is no gloss to his work, no fantasy images of streets sans overhead wires with washed and dried passengers stepping off  a sleek train car.

Mcinnes’s work shows buildings about to be ghosted. The mournful apartments,  variety stores, a diner and a thrift shop. His pencil and paper tour of King Street East, particularly between Sherman and Gage seems held together with plywood, and wobbly fencing.

“I for one thing, didn’t want them to look like architectural renderings,” Mcinnes says.

And they do not. They speak more to the messiness of life, to neighbourhoods in transition and the mystery of where did the people go who worked here and lived here.

Mcinnes day job as he calls it is doing studio management for Centre 3 on James Street North, working in their traditional and screen printing studio.

Making prints from his drawings Mcinnes says suits the documentation of this LRT corridor, where the condition of buildings changes unpredictably.

“I’ve always kind of liked the idea that you’re losing a little bit of control over your initial artwork. No matter how controlled you can make your (print) practice there is always an element of surprise in your line.”

As an artist long interested in documenting social histories, the LRT route captured his attention in 2019. It was a landscape soon to be altered by bulldozer.

He began drawing and talking to people on the street, people that were losing thier homes and their businesses.

Landmarks disappearing on King Street East

When the owners of Martin’s bowling decided reluctantly to sell to Metrolinx, Mcinnes went bowling there. Already people were trying to buy their chunk of history.

“The lanes were marked by hand numbered wooden letters, people were there trying to buy the old chrome fire extinguishers, it was jam-packed.”

You won’t find sanitized tidiness in Mcinnes’s work.

Not for him are the airbrushed depictions of Hamilton’s noble buildings. Instead the blighted streetscapes draws his eye.

The entranceway lathered in graffiti where the mail piles up and orders to comply flap in the wind as HSR busses belch by. The buildings still have a pulse.

“I do like drawing people, but I find I have  more of an affinity for the buildings. I really like to think of them as representing people,” Mcinnes says as he speaks about a print entitled “951-953 King Street East.”

“I particularly liked the ones that had  fencing and hoarding around them because that kind of pins down a specific time,” Mcinnes says, a time when Metrolinx was tearing down buildings and leaving behind a geography of nowhere.

Some believe an LRT will transform Hamilton. Mcinnes’s show “Abandoned Variety Store 4” let’s the viewer decide, but not before documenting the buildings and the stories they told.

————————

The show which also includes prints depicting the slow motion decay of the Jamesville housing project runs until the end of Saturday at Earls Court Gallery at 215 Ottawa Street North.

It will be online until end of day Monday.

With the owner’s consent, the city has designated a property in the Stinson neighbourhood under the Ontario Heritage Act, as being a property of cultural heritage value. The property located at 105 Erie Avenue is comprised of a brick residence constructed circa 1893. It has design value as a representative example of the vernacular Queen Anne Revival architectural style in Hamilton, and also displays a high degree of craftsmanship. The property has historical value for its association with Hamilton builders Brown & McBeath and with prominent Hamilton architect Alfred Wavell Peene (1869-1940), who is attributed to the circa 1908 rear addition and alterations, and the Bartmann family, who owned the property for over 80 years. The property is also linked to, and supports, its surroundings as part of the surviving late-nineteenth to early-twentieth century residential streetscape in Stinson, one of Hamilton’s historic neighbourhoods.

What Designation means

  • Designation requires a property owner to seek approval to make any alterations or changes that may impact the designated heritage attributes or the Reasons for Designation.
  • Designation requires the property owner to seek the permission of Council to demolish a designated structure.
  • In the event of change of ownership, the new owner of a designated property must give notice of the change of ownership to the Clerk within 30 days after becoming owner of the property.
  • Owners of designated properties shall maintain the heritage property and its heritage features in a safe and secure condition.
