The Town of Kingsville asks residents and school buses using gravel roads to drive extra cautiously. Recent weather fluctuations have caused a constant freeze-thaw cycle that has resulted in large potholes and ruts along our gravel roads.

The roads must dry out before we can grade them or add more gravel. We will address these repairs as soon as weather permits. In the meantime, please significantly reduce your speed when travelling or avoid those roads entirely if possible.

Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath, city staff and representatives from the Good Shepherd were on hand at the Barton Tiffany shelter site to provide media with a  first look at the facilities which started receiving residents two weeks ago.

Though much of the shelter site was cordoned off, media did see one cabin open that was ready for double occupancy. There is no firm date for all of 40 shelters to be occupied. Some units still need to be completed to make them ready for occupancy. Residents with potential to move in quickly are being interviewed. So while the encampment is still in a state of flux officials are hoping to put the rocky start behind them.

At a meeting of the General Issues Committee this week there was an extended question-and-answer session between councillors and staff over the exact timeline for the removal of tent encampments from Pier 4 and Bayfront Parks. The current encampment protocol ends next week and several councillors told staff they expect those to parks to be given priority when it comes to clearing encamped residents to either the Barton-Tiffay shelter or other shelters.

It was a mixed bag for the NDP in Hamilton in yesterday’s provincial election. In a race that many thought would be closer, owing to vote-splitting, the NDP coasted to an easy victory in Hamilton Centre, where Dr. Robin Lennox ended up 5,700 votes ahead of her nearest rival, Liberal Eileen Walker. Incumbent Independent Sarah Jama finished a distant fourth with just under 5,000 votes or 15 percent of the votes cast. It was a much closer race on Hamilton Mountain as The Conservative Candidate, Monica Ciriello captured the seat marking the first time in 30 years that a PC has won the riding that had been held by NDP Monique Taylor through four elections. Ciriello, a lawyer, is Director of Licensing and Bylaw Services for the City of Hamilton. She won, despite not participating in campaign debates. Liberal Dawn Danko finished second after doubling her party’s vote from the 2022 election but still came up 2,000 votes short. Kojo Damptey finished third, as the NDP vote dropped by over 5,000 votes. Elsewhere in Hamilton-West-Ancaster-Dundas, NDPer Sandy Shaw defeated PC John Demik by 2,600 votes.

Ciriello, joins Hamilton PC MPP’s Donna Skelly and Neil Lumsden in the Conservative caucus as they both won their seats by comfortable margins—Lumsden by over 4,000 votes against Liberal Heino Doessing, and Skelly, who won by the widest margin of all candidates in Hamilton ridings with an 8,600 margin over Liberal Joshua Bell. Skelly came within less than a percentage point of outpolling all of her opponents combined.

Hamilton’s three PC members will join a Ford caucus which only lost three seats in a sweep of the province, ending up with 80 seats.  The NDP lost four seats from their 2022 total but still retained officials opposition status. Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie brought her party back to official party status, picking up four seats to 12, but suffered personal defeat in her Mississauga riding. She told supporters on election night that despite the loss, she will stay on as Liberal Party leader. She increased the Liberal popular vote by 400,000  to 1.5 Million and seven percentage points to just under 30 percent. Green Party Leader Mike Shreiner won his own seat in Guelph and easily retained the party’s second seat in Kitchener Centre.

In Burlington PC MPP Natalie Pierre is ahead of Liberal Andrea Grebenc by just 40 votes with all polls reporting . Grebenc congratulated Pierre on election night, suggesting she was not going to ask for a recount.

Doug Ford may want to re-think his attitude towards Independent Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady. The voters there provided her with a nearly 21,000 vote victory over PC candidate Amy Martin. Brady who was a riding assistant to long-time PC member Toby Barrett was denied the PC nomination in the 2022 election but won as an independent and has now been returned by more than double her 2022 tally.
