Premier Dennis King and Canada’s other provincial and territorial premiers descended on the United States Capital Wednesday in an unprecedented diplomatic push to stave off U-S tariffs on Canadian imports. The premiers even made it to the White House in Washington for a meeting with U-S President Donald Trump’s senior advisers. Canada is facing 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminum exports to the U-S and across-the-board tariffs on all other items except energy in early March. After the meetings, B-C Premier David Eby wanted to make something clear — Canada would not become the 51st state. Eby says there were “frank conversations” about the idea floated repeatedly by Donald Trump and how the prospect was a non-starter for Canada. Still, Trump’s Deputy Chief of Staff, James Blair, suggested on social media that it was not off the table in the eyes of the Trump administration.

Housing, Land and Communities Minister Steven Myers has announced what the Province calls immediate actions in support of the protection of land in PEI. That includes starting community engagement this spring on a province-wide land-use plan for the Island and the Municipal Government Act, to ensure transparency and adherence to the Lands Protection Act and enhance oversight of non-resident land ownership.
With respect to transparency on land holdings, Myers has asked the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission to immediately investigate land holdings – both directly and indirectly – of the Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute Inc. and Great Enlightenment Buddhist Institute Society, following the rules of the Lands Protection Act.
The Minister says Islanders have valid concerns about who owns land and how it is being used, especially since PEI is a small province with limited land. However, Myers says it’s important too that the discussions are based on evidence, not assumptions.

The federal and provincial governments have signed an 86.2 million dollar agreement to increase housing development.
The money will be provided through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund and will help build capital or planning projects, expand or rehabilitate drinking water, wastewater, stormwater or solid waste infrastructure — all of which are essential for enabling more housing.
Officials say municipal governments, Indigenous organizations, non-profits, and private sector partners collaborating with another eligible applicant can apply.
The application deadline is May 1st.
